Thessaloniki Hackathon 2026: co-creating data-driven solutions for the future of public transport

27/03/2026

On 14–15 March 2026, the Olympic Museum of Thessaloniki hosted the E-MED Thessaloniki Hackathon, an intensive two-day event organised by TheTA, with support from CERTH/HIT under the Interreg Euro-MED E-MED programme, and with EIT Urban Mobility acting as Delivery and Programme Partner.

Bringing together more than 70 participants, the hackathon created a collaborative environment where students, young professionals, researchers and mobility stakeholders worked in teams to address some of the most pressing challenges facing Thessaloniki’s public transport system.

Structured around two core challenges — public transport network redesign and low-/zero-emission fleet transition planning — the event invited participants to move beyond theoretical concepts and develop realistic, data-driven and implementation-oriented solutions.

With access to operational datasets, planning tools and guidance from a multidisciplinary group of mentors, participants explored how public transport systems can become more efficient, connected, resilient and sustainable in a rapidly changing urban context.

The hackathon highlighted the importance of combining technical analysis, strategic thinking and collaborative innovation to support the transformation of urban mobility systems across the Mediterranean.
