Our story
The Mediterranean region is considered a climate change hot spot when compared to other regions of the world. One of the major contributors to this status is carbon emissions from the transport sector (29% of the total emissions in the region) emissions, and public transport offers us a unique opportunity to turn things around in the Mediterranean region. Public Transport Operators are undergoing a transition, replacing diesel buses by vehicles with no local emissions, notably electric buses.
With a view to improving the lives of Mediterranean citizens by promoting the development of green living areas through sustainable public transportation, the E-MED project is fully committed with energy efficiency, renewable energy sources integration and circularity in the PT operations, all of them crucial for the transition towards a greener Mediterranean region.
Our partners
E-MED is composed of 10 partners ranging from public transport organisations and authorities to cities, as well as knowledge partners renowned in the transport and energy field. To enlarge this cooperation, associated partners like UITP, University of Lisbon, and CARNET are strategically involved to maximise communication outreach and knowledge transfer of results.
UNIVERSITAT POLITÈCNICA DE CATALUNYA
The Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), a Catalan public university that is both rooted in the territory and an international point of reference), is an institution of research and higher education in the fields of engineering, architecture, sciences and technology, and one of the leading technical universities in Europe. The UPC serves society, works for inclusion and instils the vocation to serve, ethical values, intellectual rigour and a commitment to building a sustainable and fair world; it promotes the most appropriate teaching and learning methods for each educational environment and discipline, and transfers and disseminates the knowledge generated through research to society.
Every year, close to 6,000 bachelor’s and master’s students, more than 300 doctoral students and 1,600 continuing education students graduate. The UPC has a high graduate employment rate: 95% of its graduates are in work and 88% find a job in under three months. It is ranked in the main international rankings.

UNIVERSITY OF MARIBOR SLOVENIJA
The University of Maribor was established in 1975. With its 17 Faculties, the University Library Maribor and the Student Dormitories, it is the second largest and second oldest university in Slovenia with a long tradition. During these years, it became a successful scientific institution, the primary mission and guiding principle of which is the dissemination and enrichment of knowledge. It is rapidly developing new areas of activity, testing new study methods and seeking new ways of integrating with its environment.
Interdisciplinarity is highly valued, as its faculties cover the natural sciences, mathematics, engineering, medicine, biotechnology, social sciences, humanities and other sciences.
Special attention is paid to the involvement of students in research work and decision-making bodies as well as to the cooperation with the economy both in the field of knowledge and technology transfer into practice as well as in the field of connecting and networking students and graduates with employers in terms of transition to the labour market.
TRANSPORT AUTHORITY OF THESSALONIKI
Transport Authority of Thessaloniki S.A. (TheTA S.A.) has a public service purpose,
operates in the public interest and is supervised by the Hellenic Ministry of Infrastructure and Transportation. It aims at the development, coordination and monitoring of public urban transport; urban bus, ground and underground, railed or sea transport services in the Regional Unity of Thessaloniki via an integrated, high-quality transport system based on the principles of sustainable mobility.
CENTRE FOR RESEARCH AND TECHNOLOGY HELLAS CERTH
CERTH/HIT’s mission is to provide Transport research and to support policy- and
decision-making in land, maritime, air and intermodal transport operations, organisation, planning, standardisation, economic analysis, management, mode technology and impact thereof.
CERTH/HIT’s main strengths and knowledge fields include analysis and optimization of transport systems and transport networks, transport modelling, real-time traffic estimation, multi-source data fusion, mobility management schemes, cooperative systems and of course a good overview of ITS from the infrastructures perspective. The Institute cooperates with local, private and public bodies and other institutions in Europe and internationally and participates as coordinator or as technical leader in numerous EU funded and international research projects.
TUSGSAL
DIREXIS TUSGSAL is a public transport operator based in Badalona (Spain), characterized by its social economy structure. Its network in the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona includes 29 day and 12 night urban bus lines. Currently, DIREXIS TUSGSAL is about to start to operate in Valencia and Zaragoza metropolitan areas. Electrification is a backbone for its commitment with sustainability. Since 2016, DIREXIS TUSGSAL has been operating electric buses from different manufacturers, what has brought varied insights on current and future challenges of bus network electrification.
CARRIS
COMPANHIA CARRIS DE FERRO DE LISBOA, E.M., S.A., usually referred as “Carris“, is a municipal public company in charge of the management of services of general interest, namely, collective public surface passenger transport, through the concession contract signed with the Lisbon City Council, its sole shareholder.
In this sense, Carris is committed, in accordance with the ecological footprint reduction policies defined by the EU for the Member States, including Portugal, to create a sustainable, competitive, secure energy system, actively contributing to the accelerated decarbonization of the transport sector, and to the reduction of greenhouse gas and pollutant emissions to zero rates by the middle of the 21st century.
Thus, like so many other entities, one of the main challenges identified by Carris in recent years is related to its inevitable energy transition, whether of the vehicles (fleet) with which it operates: buses, trams and elevators, or of its infrastructures, equipment and resources that serve as the basis for the services (collective public transport of passengers on the surface) provided. CARRIS has a fleet of approximately 750 buses and 60 trams and transports around 500.000 people on a typical weekday.
MUNICIPALITY OF MARIBOR
The municipality of Maribor independently performs local matters of public importance, as determined by the legislation and the municipal statute.
Its key tasks are to provide its citizens with opportunities for quality life, work and development by supporting activities that contribute to this. These include quality health and social care, educational services (kindergartens and primary schools), cultural and sports-recreational, social and humanitarian activities.
The municipality also takes care of traffic regulation and efficient communal and transport infrastructure in its area, public order and peace and the accessibility of its citizens to non-profit rental apartments.
At the same time, it takes care of the protection of air, soil and water resources, waste management and, finally, ensuring good conditions for the development of the economy in its area.
ATB Mobilità S.p.A.
Founded in 1907, ATB operates in the area of Bergamo and the 29 surrounding municipalities offering transport and mobility services to many people every day. Over the years ATB services have expanded in both public transport (funiculars, buses and trams) and mobility services.
The main focus of the Group’s investments is to expand its activities and improving its service through the introduction of innovative technology. In order to manage processes better and offer a service that responds to the community’s needs, ATB has become a Group made up of 5 companies owned by the holding company ATB Mobilità S.p.A.
In 2003 transport services were separated from the company’s other business in accordance with regional law, and ATB Servizi S.p.A. was born from ATB S.p.A.
Redmint
Redmint is a cooperative nonprofit network made by international researchers from several European regions, joining forces together in order to promote regional sustainable development by inventing and developing projects on the territory.
Our common vision is based on the combination of two main objectives and areas of intervention, social innovation and inclusion, and technology and knowledge transfer.
Concerning the former, our projects and activities aim at putting social innovation and inclusion at the center of the development process, in order to enhance livability of different regional environments and promote sustainability by fostering behavioral change and raising awareness among citizens.
According to the Redmint approach, technology and knowledge transfer actions develop around communities and their needs. The potential of innovation can be exploited when citizens have equal access to its benefits, and it generates competitiveness when the socio-economic environment is affected as a system.
